Diversity Awareness in Massage Therapy
This course is meant to bring awareness to massage therapists on diversity within patient populations, with a focus on the LGBTQ+ community. Everyone’s experiences and needs are unique, but having exposure to the needs of specific communities can lead to more optimal, unbiased care. We never intend to harm our patients, but sometimes we can accidentally cause harm without even knowing it if we remain disconnected from community specific experiences. Learning appropriate ways to self-educate, we can begin to connect with diverse populations in a way that respects the individuality within communities as well as the individuals within them.
This course will provide an underrepresented understanding of medical research and terminology associated with the transgender communities, and we will use this understanding to discuss disconnects within the provider-patient relationship and how they can be improved. Topics such as adjustments to intake forms, proper terminology, questions to ask (and not to ask) will be covered, and I will be happy to answer questions when possible.
Using this information, we can come to an understanding of where subconscious biases may affect our work, and our patients’ experiences in ways that may have otherwise gone unrecognized, and learn how to apply better communication and listening skills to create a comfortable experience for other communities through self reflection and education.
